Well you may not earn much, but this article earned you a follow.
The guys who DON’T write the ‘how to’ bullshit, but still do well … do so because they build a community of fellow writers on here I think.
People don’t necessarily read them because they’re amazing writers - in fact, most of my best pieces are, in my opinion, not my best writing. They just have something that appeals - and it’s random. Totally random.
They read it because they’re friends who have made a connection somehow. Like you did with me, from this article.
Which probably wasn’t your intention - or mine.
In answer to your article’s point … I have made in excess of 3000 in one calendar month. And earn a reasonable monthly amount. But I’m earning a few bucks from stories from over a year ago and further back, in Dec 2022. So it builds like a sort of ‘back-royalty’.
And for the life of me, I have absolutely no idea why, and I’ve tried to dissect it and write similar pieces, and they’ve flopped by comparison while others I wasn’t expecting to do well, have become earners.
It’s a crap shoot.
But I’m deffo not in it for the earnings. I feel sorry for those that are. Or those that hoped they’d make a living like the influencers on social media - because there must be many of those who came to Medium to try.
After all it is a social media platform, and that is my takeaway and what I’ve learned about Medium. It’s mostly, not entirely, about knowing how to massage a social media platform for financial gain, a la Tim Denning. That’s his real skill. Not the quality of his writing. Not that his writing is bad.
There are many great writers on this platform- but financial success is not guaranteed through writing, it’s about leveraging the knowledge of creating social media content. And getting better at writing.
The greatest benefit of Medium, is it’s immediacy … a book takes 2-3 years from word one, until you get your first public response (roughly). Medium is immediate. You can finish a piece, post it to the web and get a clap in seconds. Or a comment.
That’s not shabby.
And I don’t do it. Leverage the social media aspect, that is. I am thinking about doing it. Not the “get rich” bullshit. But plugging into other social media opportunities to maximise what I do.
Good luck. I’ve written far more than intended. Apology.
