When the same nightmare is constantly repeated, and nothing gets done … it’s on you America.
Uvalde’s mass shooting news was breaking as I woke up this morning. And I am sickened. Not by the deaths, or the tragic loss to families, which is obvious … but by the continuation of this disease.
I am sickened that America allows this madness and disease to continue, unabated in the name of freedom. Where is the freedom in this?
In 1997, recently married, with a young family, I left my birth country of South Africa and moved to the U.K. I was one of the lucky ones who had ancestry rights and was able to relocate.
My reason was simple … violence.
In 2002, I moved to Atlanta and had another child. In 2006 we moved back to the UK.
My reason was simple — violence.
2006 had three mass shootings — Lancaster County, PA; Seattle, Washington; and Goleta, California.
I was less worried about the shootings, it was the laissez-faire attitude to them that worried me more. It was the mentality of mostly the Republican Party, not just the far right. Prayer cannot solve this. Communities coming together cannot solve this. This requires bi-partisan coming together and laws passed.
And I cannot see it happening. And I couldn’t see it happening in 2006. Since then I count 86 shootings by the end of 2021. EIGHTY-SIX.
There is not a day that goes by that I do not miss the way of life in the USA. But I made the right decision for my family and my newly ‘minted’ middle daughter who is an American passport-holding citizen.
It saddens me that she does not know her birth country, nor what an amazing place the USA is.
America loves to use the phrase — “in harm’s way” — well let me tell you America, each and every citizen in the USA lives daily … IN HARM’S WAY through a lack of gun control and no access to mental healthcare for these diseased shooters. But mainly because the moderates of America, who make up the vast majority stand by and do NOTHING.
