To all of us writers who’ve had that rejection moment!
That private conversation in our heads.
“Isn’t it just Hook, Line and Sinker”? my shadow asked … Following me.
Me: Yes, it could be that … but it could also be this:
I wrote an incredibly good humour piece recently.
Shadow: What did you do with it …?
Me: I got it rejected!
Shadow: Surely you mean … ‘It got rejected’, you obviously can’t still think it’s good then?
Me: Don’t lean in … I can’t breath. The piece is a part of me … It’s not that bad!
Shadow: But it got rejected! That’s not good.
Me: Look, stop reminding me, I don’t want to talk about it … ok! Or I’m switching the light off … ! I’ve made it pitch dark before and I’ll do it again!
Shadow: pitch black!
Me: whAT?
Shadow: It’s pitch BLACK, not pitch dark.
Me: oh shaddup! I said dark to be politically correct, didn’t I … Black Light Matters. (Hand moves towards the light switch)
Shadow: Don’t! … It’s scary.
