Thank you for highlighting my error. You may have noticed earlier in the piece that I used “deceased” correctly, so clearly it’s application is understood and this was a typo. But again, thank you.

At some future date I shall return to the grammatical crime scene and correct the typo. In the meantime it is protected by your highlighted green crime-scene-tape.

I’m looking for an editor – perhaps you fit the bill!

I also thank you for a far less accusatory, helpful response. There is hope yet for this budding ‘bromance’.

Regarding “serving” the family I suggested it could be ONE of a number of options, and certainly not for the full duration of his sentence.

I also suggested travelling (driven rather than driving), to schools to talk to youngsters about speeding and the effects.

Clearly he is liked, charismatic, I reluctantly add “good looking”, and has a social media following. All attributes to gaining the ear of bored, jaded, teenagers.

In that way he could (maybe) save a life or two for the two taken so tragically and the one ruined so needlessly. Seems like a fair trade off to me.

Versus wasting away in a State correctional facility.

I also said he should be punished! It’s the quality and quantity of punishment I have issue with, not the concept.

Please do not lose sight of the fact it was not premeditated. It really WAS an accident.

I do not want to prosecute the case here or now, but if you look at the police report and pictures you will see that the damage to the stroller and car is quite minor given the devastation to life.

It suggests that he was not speeding at the time he struck them. I’m reminded of a dear friend, lightly pushed in a bar skirmish in Spain, who fell back, banged his temple on ONE fireplace stone sticking out, and tragically died. It was a freak accident.

And yes, he was still speeding – I am not ignoring that point … but when exactly was he speeding – the car onboard system (I’m told) cannot tell exactly when, only how fast.

His Co-defendant entered a plea bargain and could / would have said anything to get his reduced sentence. His evidence should be inadmissible. And without it, the case is a great deal weaker.

It is also questionable as to why the mother was crossing the road where and when she did, and that there were no traffic signs.

Serving a family is not “slavery” … he could still study and do community service (as noted above). It’s not an all or nothing opportunity.

Regarding the cost to facilitate this “serving” option. Florida would (and is) paying far more to house him in a correctional facility for 20-plus years.

This method of interacting between the parties has been tried in other parts of the world to great effect.

Finally, I still think my diplomatic immunity point is a good example of poor American justice. I do like yours as well.

It actually supports my argument to some extent, that Cameron’s sentence is unduly harsh.

The public engagement, including yours, with my piece on American justice, suggests exactly that too. The piece has gone viral. The critical issue though is in the title – it’s “couched” as a question.

Is this justice? I ask the question – I do not profess to know the answer. Or all of the answers, I try to give alternatives. I do have an opinion, which could in no way be misconstrued as fact.

So for you to suggest it’s not a good example, is both unreasonable and inaccurate.

You clearly do not think my opinion is correct, many others don’t either – my email inbox bares testimony to exactly that. I appreciate and respect the other opinions.

What I struggle with is the public’s lack of knowledge before making sweeping statements like “he showed no empathy”. Trust me – he was in shock. Empathy was not an option at that sentencing hearing.

And yet those same outspoken members of the public, too, show zero empathy for him. A typical goose & gander example if ever I saw one.

But the overwhelming majority who have reached out to me, think it’s harsh and unnecessary. And enough people have signed a petition saying so, in Florida, and the rest of the U.S., to suggest there is some support for my opinion.
