Never smoked but I know it has a powerful hold over people. My parents kept stopping and starting up again years later.

Socialising seems to be the trigger.

To have stopped for 10-years, cold Turkey is impressive. My wife smoked and I told her I can’t be with her when she smokes.

It wasn’t control - or dominance… I just couldn’t stand the smell. She stopped cold Turkey and we are 30 years married next month.

I admire her willpower immensely.
