I’m distilling my thoughts on this piece, along with those of Dr. Yildiz.
My overriding feeling though is that writers write. And want to be read.
Without getting into the subjective realm of ‘quality’, that is the driver. Reward is the cream. And regardless of the amount of cream, they’d still write.
I’ve never bought a book based on its popularity. I may be unique in that. I’m not sure. I’ve still not read Harry Potter or seen all the movies …
I base my choice on interest. And ‘finding’ that unknown author. Something new or fresh.
The money makers all write the same stuff in varying degrees of ability and skill. It gets boring.
Online is mostly a regurgitation of historical success. Be it there own or someone else’s. Only now … we call it a ‘trend’ - which legitimises it.
It’s still old stuff - no matter how you brand it. Medium has the ability to offer something different. Even if it is just one piece a week. Out of hundreds.
That’s still a decent return for 5 bucks. The bigger question is - “would I pay more”.
After all, Cosmopolitan Magazine costs more than 5 bucks. And it’s not had a new idea since 1922.
Anyway, like I said, I’m distilling your thoughts. It’s an interesting piece. And worthy of deeper thought.
