I fully concur, and do not want to sound as if I am disagreeing, or trying to flog the horse. But it appears that the issue is not being "good" in order to "reunite" as you so eloquently put it, but to have faith. And that faith is then tested.

I do not know whether that helps or should help. At the end of the day I too struggle with the concept of mercy if it is not evident on earth.
