I have never found it smelly. It’s always quite clean and the water is very clear. Which amazed me,
Around the central square or on any of the major water ways it’s expensive … but if you venture a few streets back, and listen for the local dialect, you’ll be well catered to for little money,
A tip I got was to follow a gondolier at lunch time, and eat where he eats,
