Footballs new “Super League”
I read with interest the latest news regarding the formation of football’s new Super League, and more interestingly the views expressed by the various governing bodies; fans and commentators.
In the U.K. and Europe it’s mostly disgust and disdain. Even the UK Prime Minister is wading in. The FA is incensed. UEFA and FIFA too. I find it amusing really. They obviously thing it’s a very bad idea.
But those same organisations and people have allowed money to guide every decision in football for the past few decades. Where was the Prime Minister when Bolton and Bury we’re closing down, long before Covid. Teams with incredible history in the U.K. football league, left to die quietly. Where was the concern about the ‘community’ then? These were real community football clubs, staffed by part time grounds men and locals who just pitched in. I for one read about the grounds man at BURY, still mowing the grass even though he’d not been paid for 18-months and his clubs future was uncertain. I felt sad then. Really sad. Today I feel happy that this super league has been announced and will give back 8% to local clubs. More than is currently given. Hopefully it will be managed better too. We do not like change, that's a given, but surely its time football really changed. The FA…
