I am both a guy and a chef – a good one too. That’s not my opinion … that’s what I’m told by people in the know. In my community, people are familiar with my 3 restaurants. We’ve won quite a few awards and recognition, including Michelin. I hate that I get all the recognition – It’s always a team thing. Another thing I also hate are parties. My wife loves them and has dragged me to yet another ‘soirée’ , on my day off, to meet new ‘friends’. These people are really not friends … at best very loose acquaintances. Until we make introductions, they’d walk past me in the street not having a clue who I was, after introductions I can see them making a mental note – keep his details, it’ll gets us a table on Friday nights. That pretty much sums up our ‘Friendship’. I especially hate parties if it’s with new people. We have a select few really good friends – why can’t we just continuously hang with them. It works, it’s tried and tested and they offer up no surprises – we’ve reached that stage of being able to fart in each other’s company!

My wife says I’m anti-social, I don’t disagree. But she says it as if it’s a bad thing, a negative. I’m both comfortable with the epithet and somewhat proud to be okay with being by myself. She says we have to experience new people. I disagree. New alway comes at a cost. I like old. I’ve honed ‘people’ down to a few basic stereotypes – only faces, places and names…
