An indication of how strange 2020 has been – an overflowing Spice Cupboard.

An indication of lockdown boredom – you went shopping for exotic food ingredients to create interesting meals, you didn’t get around to all of them … so now you’ve got tamarind concentrate, tofu and bean paste in your pantry, what do you do with them?!!

Did this thought cross your mind – I can’t go to restaurants, so restaurant food will have to come to me! Or something similar. Online food channels saw a huge upturn in viewers … we needed a creative outlet.

But now you’re stuck with a cupboard full of spices that you only ever used for 3 recipes. The family showed adoration for your attempts, you felt uplifted and needed. But it was far more effort than you assumed, and after a few attempts, you got bored. Plus it’s free time you won’t EVER have again! Consequently you’re not sure you’ll ever need those spices again.

What’s the market like for second hand spices? Can I consider them a commodity item like orange juice, pork bellies and wheat? Could they sell on Craig’s list? “3000 dollars worth of slightly used herbs and spices, buyer must collect”. Probably not.

You’ll think back and be reminded of Day 4 of cooking during lock-down – it’s not just one meal a day, dinner! Shit, I’ve now got to produce THREE meals a day – my culinary…
