A Mutant Democracy
I studied political science at university, and yet the current concept of democracy is something I struggle to wrap my head around. It’s mutated into something that is nothing about democracy and everything about party power retention!
How did we go from sending individual representation to the public seat of power in any given country, and have that representation hijacked by party proportional representation!
The concept of government was created by sending a locally elected member of your area to a mutually agreed room, where he could represent you (House of Representatives) (Commoners or House of Commons) etc. Because it was too difficult to travel there yourself. You stayed home, worked and collectively funded him. He fought for things your community needed. It was simple!
So what happened to that? Bills should be funnelled up from the people, through the elected representative and signed off by the leader to become laws! Currently it goes the other way round and unnecessary laws are created that nobody asked for. Or needs! Political parties have conferences or caucuses and tell the people what they’re getting!
Is that not why the youth, who frankly are way brighter than us older folk, are disinterested in politics. Why get involved in something that…
